Is Elizabeth Really The Dancing Queen? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Thursday, 19 June 2008
She danced around her handbag with Elton John in celebration of the July 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana.

Now if the claim of a Radio 2 DJ is to be believed, the Queen has revealed a more colourful side to her character by admitting she likes to dance to a chart-topping song the title of which couldn’t be more apt.

Although now 82 years young, the often stern-faced monarch who tends to restrain her quick wit and light-hearted manner to private moments apparently revealed she still likes to take to the dance floor when she hears the Abba hit 'Dancing Queen'.

However, keep in mind that the following anecdote comes from a man who has never been shy about hiding his own wilder side and lively sense of humour: ginger-haired TV and radio presenter Chris Evans.

Speaking on his Radio 2 show, the presenter who has a history of high jinks claims: "A friend of mine went to a dinner at Windsor Castle. It was a proper disco with proper disco music."

There was, of course, recently a lively party - at Frogmore House rather than Windsor Castle - following the May wedding of Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly.

Continued Evans: "The Queen stuck around because apparently she loves to get down on the dance floor."

"She said audibly to the guests around her, 'I always try to dance when this song comes on because I am the Queen and I like to dance".

What do we all think: true or false?

I have to admit, Rachel, I do tend to think it's probably true.

But then again....the anecdote comes from Chris Evans and so trust me, anyone in Britain who knows his form would immediately smell a rat as he's a real jester. Its a bit like hearing an anecdote about the American President from, say, David Letterman or Jay Leno....you just don't know whether they're being serious or not laughing-smiley

It's quite possible that HM likes and can appreciate the song, but I rather doubt she made that last statement!

Given that this was allegedly said by the same lady who said, "I rather like being Queen," I can believe it.laughing-smiley
