MPs' Bid To Scrap Oath of Allegiance "An Attack On The State" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Friday, 08 August 2008

The former chairman of the Conservative Party has slammed a campaign by Members of Parliament to scrap the swearing of an oath of allegiance to the Queen.

MPs from across the political spectrum are supporting the bid by Liberal Democrat Norman Baker to halt the practice which sees elected representatives swearing inside the Houses of Parliament to be "faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors".

Reacting to a debate which periodically erupts, the Commons motion has been strongly condemned as "an attack on the state" by Lord Tebbit, an ally of the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

I can see how people might have a problem with being faithful and promising to bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's heir, not actually to HM. Look how he treated his oath to Di.

What does in love mean anyway? is that the attitude ONE takes when preparing to exchange vows.

I don't think HM is really the problem here, this is just my opinion.

I would have trouble even bowing to the POW, or putting currency in my pocket which has his face on it, because I would always remember how Di was treated. Is that fair? I don't know. What does in love mean? I could never love Charles as my King, that is for sure.
