Throughout this summer ardent royal watchers and casual tourists alike have walked in the footsteps of the Queen with a visit to the State Apartments at Buckingham Palace.

Now comes the opportunity to lay down a piece of royal history in one’s hallway or bedroom...

An auction house in Derbyshire is preparing to sell a piece of fabric which formed part of the surroundings on the Royal Balcony at the coronation of His Majesty King George V at Westminster Abbey on May 6th 1910.

The rare piece of fabric is set to go under the hammer at Hansons, the very auction house which recently sold that unforgettable item from Queen Victoria’s boudoir.

Measuring 48 by 36 inches, the fabric came to light during the recording of an episode of the BBC series Bargain Hunt at Castle Howard in Yorkshire.

The unique piece of royal memorabilia is accompanied by a hand written note from a guest at the coronation, the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, in whose London home the item was originally housed.

Interestingly, the author of the note refers to the new monarch as 'George IIIII' rather than 'George V'.

In 1940, and with war raging throughout Europe, the dowager Duchess's home of Belgrave House was destroyed by German bombers.

However, the royal cloth was saved and ultimately stored for sixty years in the attics of Castle Howard.

Offering her insight into the provenance of the fabric, one which acted as a backdrop to the Royal Box within the Coronation Theatre, Hansons Textile consultant Vanessa Savage says: "It encapsulates the splendour of the Abbey and the sense of occasion."

Meanwhile, auction house owner Charles Hanson has his own interpretation on the royal fabric, suggesting "it would certainly make a good throw or regal bed cover or for safer retention it may be hung and mounted behind glass."

Continues Mr Hanson: "Our auction guide price is between £100-200."

The auction, which is due to take place at the Mackworth Hotel in Derbyshire next Wednesday (3rd September 2008) will also include a fine pair of Queen Victoria's stockings.
