Prince Harry 'May Return To Afghanistan' PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Monday, 06 October 2008

It’s reported today that Prince Harry may be destined to return to frontline service in Afghanistan next year.

The Chief of the General Staff, Sir Richard Dannatt, has reiterated his earlier views, telling the Daily Mail that he hopes the prince will be able to serve alongside other members of the British army "like any other officer."

According to the paper, the Blues and Royals of The Household Cavalry – in which Harry is a Lieutenant – will possibly return to Afghanistan for a further tour of duty in September 2009.

Harry returned from a 10-week tour of duty in Helmand Province at the end of February this year. He was originally destined to spend ten weeks serving alongside other troops in southern Afghanistan but was prematurely withdrawn when the US-based Drudge Report website disclosed his presence.

It's also suggested today that the 24-year-old prince may even be deployed to Iraq.

However, Clarence House is remaining understandably silent about any future deployment, saying only: "Prince Harry is committed to his career and he remains ready to do whatever is required."

The prince is currently back in London having returned from Canada - where he's been on military training - to act as an usher at the funeral last Friday of his godfather, Gerald Ward.

However, a Sunday newspaper sensationalised his planned return by claiming it was solely due to the fact his girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, was hospitalised and operated on following a severe bout of toothache.

Actually economics assumes people make decisions in their best interest, and will make choices which are rational due to their own self love, if they love themselves they can love others.

No one in Afghanistan has forced me to speak German or Japanese or forced me to not go on the internet. If anything it is the other side which appears to have been bombed into the stone age, and appears to not have been as desvated by the global market crashing, possibly it has already crashed for them.

To compare these wars and these countries with old imperialistic countries, is silly, possibly Britain is a better comparison, and we already speak English.

You really think if Harry goes, he wont be taken care of, and possibly at the expense of something else not being taken care of.

How many hip operations could have been done, instead of Di's accident inquest.

People's interest should matter, if it doesn't, what are we fighting for?

What nonsense! "service before self" is not hard to comprehend. And that is what Harry and William are doing - serving their country. As to Princess Diana stopping her son's from going into the military, hardly likely! Both her blood family and her ex husband's family have a long tradition of serving in the military. She would be justly proud of both her son's. And just in case you haven't noticed, Charles' and Diana's sons are grown men, not children. If the servicemen and women of my parent's generation had attitudes like some of the posters here, we would all be speaking Japanese or German, working hard labour, and with no time or internet access to make such vapid comments.

I agree with you Emily when you think of all the good these Princes could be doing in the world with their money and influence. They are making war sound glamourous and how they can hardly wait to get there to fight. They know they will be protected not like other young men in the military. What a shame glamorizing war. Also it is very political when you think of it Harry going to Afghanistan. How self centered these Princes have turned out darling Diana would have put an end to that.

I can think of no better training than to serve in the Armed Forces. Neither, George V or George VI had any training in statecraft as such, but both served in the navy. Somehow they made excellent monarchs during difficult times. The military teaches discipline, courage under fire (emotional and physical), leadership, and commitment. When all else fails, they can learn by watching their grandmother.

I think they want to stir up the "enemy", i guess if someone on the other side tried to speak some yuppie on our side would call it spam, These people on our side might even appear to be bots to the other side, in might be hard for them to know which ones are humans and which ones are bots purposely trying to get a reaction from them so they will have an excuse to attack.

Do you think for a moment Harry will really be put in harms way. If they wanted this secret, they would keep it secret.

It seems to me that Harry has always wanted to be a soldier. Working for the security of his nation is an honourable occupation; and although I wouldn't want to see Harry wounded or killed, I admire his determination to be in a field that truly interests him and also benefits other people. As for William, he will be head of the Armed Forces when he becomes King; having experience of the different Services gives him some insight into the people he will one day lead.thumbsup

What I notice and wonder is why these princes are not being schooled in languages and statecraft.

IS WAR the ONLY profitable enterprise there is, in which they will spend their futures?

There's nothing like alerting the Taliban to the possibility of Harry's return to Afghanistan.
