PCC Upholds Burrell Complaint Over Diana Sex Story PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Sunday, 30 November 2008

The Press Complaints Commission has upheld a complaint by Paul Burrell over an offensive front page story in the News of The World.

In June this year the Murdoch-owned paper splashed with the sensational headline: 'Burrell: I Had Sex With Diana'.

The story came about thanks to an interview the paper undertook with Burrell’s brother-in-law.

Siding with Burrell, the PCC says that the failure of the News of The World to include the former butler’s denial of the story in the article could have misled readers.

It wasn't the class thing, it was just the thought of Di with Burrell. I found it unbelievable. I don't really connect class with Burrell

In my father's day "it would have been orff with his head" - such a simple solution to a messy problem. So easy to put a servant or serf in his place, if not by removal of said head but by trampling his cloak. I do agree that, as a royal personage, one would keep one's distance from the unwashed working classes - the proximity might offend one's nostrils.

Indeed, I have observed, that anyone with a whiff of perceived nobility, wherever they are dispersed around the globe, has to draw it to the attention of all.

I think the only person that appeared to take the article seriously was Burrell.

I know the difference between reign and rule--and I am familiar with your Web site. I also know what a constitutional monarchy is, and, more importantly, I know what a Constitutional Monarch MAY NOT do. And unlike Elizabeth Kelman of Merryville, Tennessee, I don't claim that God revealed to me that I am the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, born prior to their marriage, and somehow spirited away, without their knowledge. Now THAT'S a web site worth visiting.

You know, Anyacat, I hate to say this; but I don't think you know what the Monarchy is FOR.

Let's talk about what Reign VERSUS Rule MEANS, OKAY?

Heh heh. I have no reason, so late in life, to hide my paternity. I and my children have received my father's gifts in heredity; and I am fascinated by now with the contorted and difficult history of England. If you don't want to hear about it, you can always "skip it." But at this point, I am pursuing what would have been my vocation :: the supervision of [powers of] governance.

Maybe if you stopped telling people about your "father" (without proffered evidence) you might have a better chance of correcting the BBC "error" using facts that support your argument.

Yellow journalism downplays legitimate news in favor of eye-catching headlines that sell more newspapers. Sounds to me as if the failure to include salient facts in a news story is something entirely different. In this case, News of the World did not lie, they just did not tell the whole story. We call that Fox News in the United States.

This is what we in America call yellow journalism.

There's a story in the BBC archive about my father which INSINUATES unfounded accusations on the basis of no proffered evidence.

That too is yellow journalism, and I have yet to get BBC to redact or correct that quite libelous entry. I'll put up the link if anyone asks.
