One of Britain’s kings of entertainment met the Queen at Buckingham Palace today.

And thankfully for Her Majesty, while America's Secretary of State was keen to entertain her on the piano last night, Des O’Connor was never destined to break into song!

The all-round entertainer who was the butt of comic legend Eric Morecambe’s jokes about his vocal abilities nevertheless discovered Ma'am is a fan.

Recalling his meeting with Her Majesty in the Palace ballroom, where he received his CBE for services to the entertainment industry, the entertainer revealed: "She said 'Thank you for many hours of enjoyable entertainment' and I'm told she watches Countdown."

O’Connor recently quit the long-running Channel 4 show which, as we already knew from Princess Margaret, the Queen regularly watched as it followed live coverage of horse racing.

Asked if he’d received any special requests from the Queen, the performer who was actually a close friend of Eric Morecambe joked: "She begged me to sing but you know there were other people waiting and she can buy my new album. It's called Inspired, so it will be all right."

The star, who was accompanied to the Palace by his wife, Jodie Brooke Wilson, his four-year-old son Adam and four daughters, said of his royal accolade: "This is just a very nice cherry on the cake."

"I'd be a hypocrite if I said I didn't enjoy it. It's very enjoyable. I've got my wife here, daughters and my little boy so it's a good day even with this weather."

I've always had a soft spot for Des O'Connor. Firstly because my Uncle was part of his "troupe" of Des's black and white series in the late 60s. Uncle took his turn in playing out jokes to Des and Des would giggle infectiously.

Secondly, I went to a broadcast of his daytime TV show about 5 years' ago and he did his own "warm up" before going on air, rather than using someone else to do it. He was great fun and, again, his infectious giggle got us all in the mood for the broadcast.
