On this day 42 years ago, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip had their fourth and
final child: H.R.H. Prince Edward Antony Richard Louis Mountbatten-Windsor who, following his marriage, became H.R.H. The Earl of
Wessex.
The rather shy Edward grew up almost almost despising royal life. He just wanted
to be normal and now, as he struggles to provide such normality for his
daughter Lady Louise Windsor by keeping her out the Press, I'd like to ask: is he really the 'odd royal out'?
By 'odd' I mean is he the royal that will succeed in keeping Louise's life private? And will he ever get to enjoy his own
normality outside of his royal layer as The Earl of Wessex?
I'm going to
take a look back at Edward's life and his attempts to be normal and examine how he's
shaped and changed into the man he is today. I'll finally question if Lady Louise
will get Edward's long desired wish for his little daughter to enjoy a private life.
To the royals there are two personas you must be: the public and the private you. As a Royal, you must never let these personas cross, although this isn't so easy to achieve.
I believe Prince Edward is not much different than
you and I. He is, however, very different from his family members. He was
known also as the 'working' royal as he has held a job down before marrying
Sophie Rhys-Jones. He has had contact with people and not just staff. He's had to survive in the real world beyond the gates of Buckingham Palace.
Edward is also a very thoughtful person who has a natural empathy for the
common man. This is why he is one of my favorite royals.
Being the youngest of the Queen's children, Edward, along with older brother Andrew, enjoyed the advantage of having all his mother's attention.
To this day the Queen and Edward remain close, Her Majesty sharing her youngest son's desire for privacy where family is concerned. This is most
likely why we don't see many photographs of Edward with his daughter, Lady Louise.
