Edward has had his fair share of bad Press, a fact which makes
him similar to his relatives in fearing the limelight.
In a crowd of Edward's gazillion cousins you could still be able to spot him
out. He'd be the royal not going so hard with the crowd.
Back in the
1980s, the Prince joined the Royal Marines, allegedly to please his father, the rough
tempered Duke of Edinburgh, but ultimately quit because he didn't like it.
Already
there was a so-called 'problem' with Eddie.
But to tell the Duke of
Edinburgh he was quitting the Marines and heading into theater. Well...that reportedly sent his
father into a rage.
Royals didn't work like you or I in a doctor's office
or a lawyer's firm. No, they were brought up into a life of duty and
responsibility on behalf of their country, undertaking engagements and military
appointments to show their pride, as well as help influence the country into a more
positive view of the monarchy.
Be that as it may, Edward still wanted to
work and do things his way. I think he was right to make his own decisions, it
gave him strength and allowed him to be true to himself.
In the late 1980s, Edward came up with an idea to raise money for The Duke
of Edinburgh Awards. The concept was a television show called It's A Royal Knockout in which
celebrities would compete in games and sports activites whilst dressed in medieval costumes, all in aid of charity. As well as himself, the show also featured Edward's siblings, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson (the Duke and Duchess of York) and Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.
Charles and Diana (the Prince and Princess of Wales) refused an invite to take part in the event as it was deemed
embarrassing.
They were proven right as the show flopped and critics mocked
Edward's attempts.
The whole debacle has since proven to be a huge embarrassment to the Prince. Unfortunately, the Queen didn't step in, back in 1987, to stop the show as she didn't wish to be seen to be unsupportive of Edward. I'm sure there've been times the Queen would have wanted not to become
monarch, but fate had its way.
