Prince Edward: The Odd Royal Out? PDF Print E-mail

I believe Edward's story. Why would he want to breech his nephew's privacy when that's all he himself has ever wanted in life?

Whatever the truth, Edward's days at Ardent were numbered. He handed his tapes of William over to Buckingham Palace and ultimately resigned from his company. Sophie quit from her company too after a video, secretly recorded by the News of the World, surfaced of the Countess allegedly boasting about her royal connections.

Both Edward and Sophie started undertaking full-time royal engagements as a full-time member of the family business, 'The Firm' (the name Edward's grandfather, King George VI, gave to the Royal Family).

Since the controversies involving Ardent & William, Edward's life has taken a different turn. He is today one of the most hard working royals along side his father, wife Sophie and his sister Anne, the Princess Royal. The negative press is now primarily in the past and most likely in the cobwebs of his mind.

As for being normal? Since the newspaper coverage about him and Sophie has died down, we rarely get any tidbits about the couple. He does receive more positive Press about his engagements and such and I think that's where some of Edward's normality can enter into his life, because when a royal is receiving good Press that should indicate you're normal to others.

To me that's not the only way Edward can seek shelter from royal life. Through his child, and any children to come, he can give them the life he craved...the life his own wife walked away from to be by his side on the public stage, under constant scrutiny.

Edward denied Louise a high profile title such as Princess and Her Royal Highness as a means to keep her out of the public eye. Although we see photos here and there about Louise, she still has her privacy for now.

Princess Anne tried to give her children, Peter and Zara Phillips, privacy, but with Zara being famous for her rebelliousness and good looks, plus her success as an equestrian sportswoman, only Peter has really had a private life.

One out of two isn't so bad, but what for Louise's future? Can Edward continue to protect her privacy once her childhood is over?

Only time will tell...

Wow- other lisa, I also hope no one ever confuses us for the other. When you can make a little more sense, I won't mind you sitting on my plinth. I did not attack Emma's article- just said Philip did not go into a rage. And if you think raising one million dollars for charity is "failing", that is yet another reason I hope we don't get compared to one another. Hmmm, I am curious to know why you haven't attacked Mike TTG yet. Now his comments are noteworthy!

Hey, I think it's not fair what you wrote, Lisa! Well of course It's A Royal Knockout failed, but Edward was young and he made mistakes just like eveyone else.

Okay, Sophie didn't make the nice comments but I think she was just honest!

As you see now, Charles married Camilla once the Queen Mother had died and Sophie has been something like a replacement for Diana. If Diana was there, Sophie wouldn't ever have got any attention, but when she married she got it and from then on she was really big in the spotlight and on the front pages. It's just that nobody else says that honestly because people like you think it's arrogant or something like that.

Sophie never said she's like Diana, but she got that attention. Of course, for the clients it was very useful to have her as a promotion - but that was completly her decision because it was clear that one day the newspapers would realize it and write it on the front pages.

Especially since they have their toddler, Lady Louise, Edward and Sophie seem to be very friendly and, as you can see, they've learnt, I think...sensible and hard working. When they don't make a mistake newspapers aren't interested in them,I think. It's a really sad thing!

I think the article by Emma is a great thing, showing that there aren't only people wishing Edward and Sophie would make a fool of themselves. They are, and they will stay, my 3 favourite members of the Royal Family!

Good luck! Lisa (never, never mix me up with the first person who has written here, please because I'm not like that in any way)

Absolutely beautiful article. I love Edward more than any other member of the RF. I believe he is more like his mother than any of the other children. May God continue to Bless Edward, Sophie and Lady Louise.

Excellent article. I wish Edward could read it.

Thanks for clearing that up but this is solely going off what I read, Lisa. I form opinions by what I read. Thanks for your comments and constructive criticism. I will keep an open mind and eye out next time :D.

Warm Regards,
EL

I think Prince Edward's story is a suprisingly good story. I have come to admire him and his wife. They are hard working, and I like so much the fact they are close with the Queen and Prince Philip. I like the fact that Edward and Sophie offer the Queen some happy moments, and let's not forget theirs is until now a succesful marriage.

Edward has been attacked unfairly by the press, and especialy the treatment he got from his own brother (and nephew too) was despicable.

I am glad he has proven to be a gentleman though, and he really has made a beautiful family. I wish him the best and I do hope the press will focus more on him and Sophie (if jealous Charles will allow it of course). And I hope litle Louise will be healthy enough in the future, in order to see her more often too.

Well done Eddie and Sophie.

Actually Emma, Philip did not go into a "rage" over Edward quitting the Marines. He wrote Edward a letter just asking him to be sure of his decision as the press would never let him live it down.

Letters have surfaced that Philip wrote to members of the military at the time, discussing Edward leaving the Marines. His harshest comment was that it was unfortunate.

The Royal Knockout show was panned simply because Edward only allowed one company to film it and one photographer( Jayne Fincher) to take pictures. His contempt for the media found him relegating the bulk of the press in a tent where they couldn't see anything and in their petulance, they attack him to this day about it. In actual fact, that event raised about one million pounds for charity so it was hardly a disaster, except for his public relations.

There was nothing "alleged" about what Sophie stupidly said to the fake sheik. She absolutely, without a doubt told him that having a member of the royal family present at his function would guarantee publicity. She used those words. She promised both herself and Edward as bait. What a fool! Not to mention all the other family gossip she passed on for no other reason than to win some business. She has also made some unflattering remarks about Diana all while claiming to be on Diana's "plinth" as far as the public is concerned. Sophie needs to realize a haircut doesn't make you another person.

I personally would have never advised Edward to announce that Ardent would not focus on royal subjects. He pandered to the media who publically blackmailed his image because they were jealous that he had better access than they did. Any time you let the media rule you, you will go wrong.

All that being said, let's hope Sophie has learned her lesson and Edward is the best of the lot. They do seem happy and both are clearly besotted with their daughter.

Does anyone else think it was just the ODDEST thing that NO ONE from his family visited Sophie or Louise in the hospital when she was born? In a normal family, relatives would have been in and out yet I don't think one royal visited either of them. So strange.
