William's Girl Kate Is The Hair Apparent PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland

Just a week after the alleged £3,000 a month hairdressing bills of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall made the headlines, there's news today that Prince William's girlfriend is having her locks tended to by a royal hairdresser.

According to the Daily Mail's Richard Kay, Kate Middleton (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Kate at Gatcombe) and her mother, Carole, now call on the services of none other than the Countess of Wessex's hairstylist, Richard Ward, who is based in London's exclusive Sloane Square.

According to Kay's source: "Katie drops in with her mother Carole and is very down-to-earth. You wouldn't say she was a preener by any means, but she always looks great."

Royal hairstyles have always been a great source of media discussion. It's certainly the case that, were a royal lady of today to follow in the footsteps of Queen Mary by allegedly having her wigs sewn to her hats, we the public would likely know about it!

One royal lady who rarely if ever changes her hairstyle is Princess Anne. It was therefore to the surprise of many that, in March 1985, the Queen's truly non-frivolous daughter, a woman who professes not to have an interest in how she looks, appeared at an evening engagement with her hair tinted with a shade of pink.

Other royal ladies, such as Sarah, Duchess of York and Princess Michael of Kent aren't afraid to use their flowing tresses to display flowers or jewels, or simply to appear with a new look.

In Sarah's case, her long red hair was very much her calling card in the late 1980s and so it was something of a shock when, just months before the world learnt of her marriage collapse, the Duchess appeared in public with her long hair cut into a short bob.

Richard Kay - a man who is usually very much in the know when it comes to matters royal - today refers to Kate Middleton as a "Princess-in-waiting". If this is indeed the case, let us hope Kate never has to call upon the emergency services of a hairdresser, as happened with her boyfriend's Mum in the 1980s.

Diana, Princess of Wales surprised the media by appearing with a very short haircut, the style and wisdom of which was debated throughout the land. Many said the cut was too short and even a little masculine, with some cruel commentators saying it didn't flatter Diana as it highlighted her rather prominent nose.

The fact is that, in this instance, Diana had little choice but to opt for a short hairstyle, be it flattering or not. The reason?

In the kind of trip undertaken by most royals and public figures who sadly live under the constant threat of terrorism or kidnap, Charles and Diana — dressed in full army kit — privately visited the SAS headquarters to watch a display of firearms and small ammunition.

The young Princess was a little self conscious about squashing her hair and so unfortunately failed to properly secure her safety helmet.

As the royal couple watched the display, a very different performance was going on behind the future King and Queen.

At the end of the display, a balaclava-clad soldier sidled up to Diana and politely informed "Ma'am" that she should perhaps take a look in the mirror.

To Diana's horror, her hair had caught fire during the SAS display of firearms but, not wishing to upset the royal guests (and in a typically understated British manner), a neighbour of the Princess had said nothing and instead quietly attempted to extinguish the flames which were licking Diana's hair.

As the Princess herself explained: "I couldn't understand why someone kept hitting me on the back of the head!".

The result: the "Shy Di" style which had spawned so many copycat cuts on women around the world was so badly singed that the world's most famous fashion icon had no option but to have much of her 'big' hair chopped off!

Thanks for that little story on a young Diana and her hair getting burnt! That was great.

I wouldn't though read too much into Kate using Sophie's hairdresser.

Perhaps Sophie told Kate how good he is. Or, she discovered him some other way.

Either way, Kate has lovely hair and I am sure, if she becomes a Princess will look stunning.
