The Heat Is On For Charles & Camilla In Egypt PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Friday, 24 March 2006
Charles and Camilla's tour of Egypt, which is being hugely under-reported, has finally made it to at least one front page. The couple have been snapped strolling arm-in-arm, Camilla holding an old-fashioned parasol under her arm. This particular image sees the Prince and his wife looking like extras from a Merchant Ivory film (rather apt considering A Room With A View is Charles's all-time favourite movie).

As they head towards their first wedding anniversary on April 9th, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall continue to look as if they are genuinely happy together, smiling for the cameras despite the wearying 95-degree desert heat.

In response to the Spouse of The Year award she's received, Camilla sent her reply to the Oldie awards ceremony back in London, saying (via her mouthpiece, her great friend and author Jilly Cooper) that she is currently on "spousing duties" in "some far-flung corner of the globe".

Although back home she is becoming much more of a single entity, attending many engagements on her own, on tour at least Camilla really is very much 'the spouse', helping to keep notoriously pessimistic husband Charles happy and content with his work.

Later on Thursday the royal visitors toured a sewing project in Siwa. Camilla took the opportunity to buy a pair of jeans for her daughter, Laura, asking one of the Egyptian embroiderers: "Are these going to Italy? They're so brilliant. My daughter would absolutely love it. Can I buy some? Just tell me how much. Size 12."

In response to her request, Camilla was asked a question which surely hasn't needed to be asked for a very long time, the designer shouting to her: "Your home address? Your home address?".

A joker in the entourage — surely not a cheeky member of the Press?! — replied: "A rather large palace in the centre of London, actually."

Camilla apparently didn't pay for the jeans there and then. Perhaps she is now taking after Charles in not handling money (the Prince even goes so far as to have his notes ironed prior to a church service so that they are in perfect condition for the collection plate!).

Once at their final destination in Italy, the jeans have a price tag of £150...a huge amount of money for us, maybe, but a drop in the ocean for the Duchess who, according to Richard Kay, is spending around £500 a day (no, that isn't a typing mistake) on make-up alone.

The Daily Mail is also reporting that Charles and Camilla have spent a night sleeping in a clay and wood house lit only by candles, with no electricity.

I have to laugh at the Fred and Gladys headline. We spoke with Gladys' security man in Washington D.C. in November and he didn't know who Gladys and Fred were so we filled him in. He said, "I never knew that." Well, he knows now and I am sure he appreciates us telling him so this headline is not a puzzle to him. I chuckle to think he is giving us a small thought! laughing-smiley

Even though I am no fan of C&C, I must agree with AgnesK comments. There seems to be huge coverage of this tour! All the papers including Hello magazine has photos, articles etc.
Is it maybe because they are not making front page news? Did Charles' tours with Diana make front page headlines? I don't know so I am just asking.

camilla NEVER quite looks the part. She always appears stressed and never naturally at ease, in any photos..Look at the photo of her amid the other women! You would think by the expression on her face, she is praying for someone to rescue her from this scene. You would think that she would have been making some sort of an attempt to show an interest in what the ladies were doing and trying it initiate some sort of communication. Instead she looks lost and bored and would appear to have no idea why she is there?????blue-smiley

seems to me that £500 could be given to a charity rather than an obvious lost cause. Some people, well those people who have a meltdown when I make a negative camilla comment, have been known to say to me "if camilla was beautiful, you wouldn't talk about her the way you do". Let me clarify this for the record. If camilla looked like a fashion model, she would still be the person who helped with the destruction of two marriages and whatever damage may have been done in the process to four children. Therefore, looks do not matter where she is concerned.

Under-reported? You don't read all those articles in The Sun, The Mirror, The Times, The Telegraph, do you? I know that The Royalist is hugely pro-Diana but can you once try to write some truth? Thank you.

I just about fell of my chair, with the caption of 'Fred and Gladys', what a comedic pair these make. As for genuinely happy, well we all know they are very good at presenting a united front when needed. As for spending 500 pounds on make up a day, why? it is not going to improve her appearance, her years of smoking alone are not going to be erased with even the most expensive moisturisers. And finally, if Charles and Camilla spent a night in a clay and wood house lit only by candles, then I really believe Elvis is alive and working undercover for the FBI. (hint here guys, I dont' believe Elvis is alive and working for the FBI). What this couple will do for publicity.
