Prince Harry's Popularity Cemented In Wax PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland

Confirming his status as one of the most popular members of the Royal Family, Madame Tussauds has confirmed they have commissioned a waxwork of Prince Harry.

But according to the London tourist attraction, there's no place, as yet, for a model of the Prince's step-mother, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

According to a spokesman for the London museum: "Prince William has proved extremely popular with guests and many have asked if we had plans to complete the royal line-up by making Prince Harry took. In fact Harry has always been on our radar, but we waited until he came of age at 21. This is our policy for all royal figures."

"But as for Camilla, we have no plans for her because there is not enough demand."

The decision as to who is or isn't popular enough to warrant a waxwork — each model costs over £100,000 — lies with visitors to the museum. Everyone who goes through the door has the option to fill in a questionnaire asking which famous person would they like to see in wax.

For several decades, the majority of the Royal Family were on display. However, in the fallout from the collapse of the royal marriages of Charles and Diana, and Andrew and Sarah, Tussauds took the decision to melt down or remove the waxworks of several members of the House of Windsor, including the Duke and Duchess of York and the Queen's other children, Prince Edward and Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.

However, despite her death in Paris in August 1997, the final waxwork ever commissioned of Diana, Princess of Wales, continues to be on prominent display in the same room as her eldest son, William.

Despite the museum's greater emphasis on celebrity rather than royalty (although no doubt some would muse that, sadly, the two have combined), in 2002 Madame Tussauds unveiled a new waxwork of the Queen to mark the 50th anniversary of Her Majesty's accession to the throne.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Express story also reports on how Camilla displayed a self-mocking sense of humour during the royal tour of Saudi Arabia this weekend.

Presenting the Duchess with a gift of a purple and pink outfit which covers the whole body, the late King Faisal's granddaughter, Princess Basma, told Camilla: "We have it for you in a box, prepared for you. But if you wear them all the time you will lose your waist, you don't realise."

In response, Camilla quipped: "I'm already doing that!". And once again, her daughter Laura wasn't far from the Duchess's mind as she told her royal host: "I'm going to have a terrible problem because my daughter will want to steal it."

Although Laura Parker Bowles has never sought out the limelight (although her May wedding to her longtime boyfriend will no doubt receive much media coverage), her brother Tom is about to be the subject of an episode of a BBC documentary series on 'celebrity' tastebuds.

In the programme Eating...With Tom Parker Bowles, which will be broadcast on Wednesday 5th April, the "food writer, bon viveur and Prince Charles's stepson explains how he found excitement and fulfilment in the kitchen in a journey echoed by men across the country in the 90s. The programme tells the story of how Tom fell in love with organic, locally-produced food, and he shares Camilla's special recipe for stuffing a chicken."

One of the most beautiful displays at MT's I have seen was the Royal Brides display.

Just after Sophie's wedding to Edward they got out the bridal waxworks for Diana, Sarah and Sophie. It was breathtaking.

How nice that a waxwork of Harry has been commissioned. I would put it with the waxworks of Diana and William as a tribute to Diana's greatest role, that of Mother.
