All
of us who've long followed the royal scene know that the friendship
between the Prince of Wales and Barbra Streisand has often made for
some innuendo-laden reporting. Today, however, a new book is alleging
outright that Charles had a passionate "affair" with the world famous superstar.According to a new book, Barbra: The Way She Is by Christopher Andersen, author of a rather sensationalist book on Princes William and Harry (Diana's Boys), Streisand had a failed love affair with many famous men, including Prince Charles and "Princess Diana's doomed lover Dodi Fayed." What is most startling about this allegation is the fact that the book claims the Prince and the actress enjoyed a relationship when Charles was very much involved with Camilla (and still legally married to although officially separated from Diana). At the time of his 1994 tour of Los Angeles, newspapers widely reported on the fact that Charles had a two hour, 'private' meeting with Streisand in her hotel room. However, this appears to be the first time that an outright allegation of an affair has made it to print. Referring to a separate occasion, a royal servant is quoted in the book as claiming the Prince and Streisand were "very affectionate" with each other during a private dinner at Charles's Highgrove home: "I entered the room and obviously interrupted them. They were quite flustered." According to the book, Diana's great friend Lady Elsa Bowker tells the author: "Diana knew that Charles was infatuated with Miss Streisand. She would not have been surprised at an affair." The late Princess of Wales met Barbra Streisand and her co-star Nick Nolte at the Royal film premiere of The Prince of Tides in London on February 18th 1992. Charles first met Streisand, whom he referred to in his diary as being "devastatingly attractive with a great deal of sex appeal", during a visit to America in 1974. At this time he was pictured being offered coffee by the star as he visited the set of her latest movie at the Warner Brothers Studios in Los Angeles. At the time the Hollywood star joked that she could have become "a real Jewish Princess." But it was to be another 20 years before the Press truly began publishing insinuations (nothing more) about the friendship. In April 1994, a happy and relaxed Charles was pictured meeting Streisand when he officially attended one of her gigs in London. During the sell-out tour, titled Barbra: The Concert, the singer spoke on stage about a previous royal encounter: "In 1966 I opened in Funny Girl at the Prince of Wales Theatre, and I remember opening night, Princess Margaret came. And the audience was so distracted by her presence that their reactions were way off. So when she came backstage I said to her: "You should be here on a night when you're not here." She never came back." At the end of 1994, the friendship between the heir to the throne and one of the world's most famous women was again the focus of huge media attention when it was learnt that Charles, on an official tour of America, had enjoyed the private meeting with Streisand in her Los Angeles hotel suite. While his Aunt may not have met her again, if we're to believe Andersen's claims then it would seem the future King wasn't so easily scared away. Comment on this article
