Princess Beatrice Celebrates An Election Win PDF Print E-mail

Princess Beatrice is celebrating after being elected Head Girl at her boarding school. It is a major achievement for the young royal who had struggled at school due to suffering from dyslexia.

17-year-old Beatrice was elected in a poll of 300 girls and staff at the exclusive St. George's School in Ascot, Berkshire. A statement from the school reads: 'This year the school has elected Princess Beatrice of York to be head girl and we are delighted that she has accepted the position'.

As to be expected, the Princess's parents, the Duke and Duchess of York (Andrew and Sarah) are said to be "immensely proud".

A friend of the couple tells today's Daily Mail: "It’s pretty amazing when you consider that she has had to have extra classes in reading and writing for many years".

It was only when Beatrice was 7-years-old that she was diagnosed as suffering from 'word blindness', formally known as dyslexia.

The discovery came about when it became clear her younger sister, Princess Eugenie, was at the age of just five reading texts with which Beatrice was clearly struggling.

In her very first interview, given to the society magazine Tatler to celebrate her 16th birthday in August 2005, Beatrice publicly admitted she was a dyslexic, explaining with a sense of maturity beyond her years: "I have been given circumstances that anyone would wish for and I do believe that I must do something good with it. That was one of the reasons why I came out publicly to let people know I am dyslexic. It was my decision to do that because it's a problem helped by more people knowing about it."
