On February 10th 2005, the Major's wish for closure in the whole affair came to fruition when, over three decades since the romance began, the engagement of HRH The Prince of Wales and Mrs Camilla Parker Bowles was announced.

Speaking in the grounds of his home on the Dorset estate of his daughter Annabel, the Major declared the "whole family" were delighted at the news, saying: "I've spoken to Camilla since the announcement and she says they are both very happy. I haven't thought much about being Prince Charles's father-in-law but it will be fine — a bit of a weight to carry, though."

"I don't know much about the wedding, like who will be attending, but it will be a great day and I would like to be there."

Indeed he was, arriving with his daughter, Annabel, at Windsor Registry Office on Saturday 9th April 2005. At the height of the scandals surrounding his daughter, the Major had said he found the media coverage "highly intrusive".

Now, at last, he was simply delighted to have lived to enjoy the chance to take pride of place as a very happy and proud father of the bride alongside the Queen and Prince Philip, Princes William and Harry and his grandchildren, Tom and Laura, in the official wedding photographs taken inside Windsor Castle.

Their relationship now strong, Camilla's father was touched when the future King spoke in his wedding day speech of the "Gallant Major", telling him: "I am proud to be your new son-in-law."
