Page 5 of 5 Following the royal marriage, the news that Camilla's father was to 'live' at Clarence House resulted in yet more attacks on the Duchess, although in this instance it was wholly unfair. The clear implication was that the "taxpayer" was footing the bill for the new Duchess's father to reside inside a royal home (albeit it a private royal home at that). The truth of the matter was that the Prince, as with many families, had simply set aside a room for his aging father-in-law for those occasions when his wife wished him to be nearby, the refurbishments for the royal couple's private rooms paid for by the Prince. The Major primarily resided at his home situated on the Dorset estate of Camilla's sister, Annabel Elliott. Understandably wishing to spend as much time as possible with her increasingly frail and sick father, Camilla often drove Major Shand between her new royal homes. The two were incredibly close, the Duchess, along with her younger siblings, offering her father even more love and support following the death from osteoporosis of their mother, the Major's wife of almost fifty years, Rosemary, in 1994. The Prince hired a private jet to fly himself and Camilla back to London, from where the Duchess travelled to Dorset to be with her father. Major Bruce Shand died of "natural causes" at 10am on Sunday 11th June at his home in Dorset. He is survived by his children, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, Annabell Elliott and Mark Shand, all of whom were by their father's bedside when he passed away. Major Shand was 89 years of age.
