His most famous royal friendship was that he enjoyed (intermittent estrangements aside) with Diana, Princess of Wales.

Although the two famously had a falling out in 1997, the two were very publicly reunited when they attended the funeral of murdered fashion designer Giannia Versaci that summer, Diana leaning over to comfort the sobbing star.

Tragically, just weeks later Elton was back in the Princess's presence, at her funeral in Westminster Abbey, where the Oscar winning singer and composer performed a re-written version of his tribute to another fallen icon, Marilyn Monroe.

Candle In The Wind, Elton's tribute to 'England's Rose, duly raised over £20 million pounds for The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

Having gone on to sell over 35 million copies, the song became one of the world's top selling singles of all time, outranking Bing Crosby's classic White Christmas.

In Canada, Elton's heartfelt tribute to his friend stayed at the number one spot in the charts for almost a whole year, while in Britain it was recently voted number one single of all time by TV viewers.

Speaking to a US TV show in December 1997, Elton revealed he'd concealed his grief for Diana at the time of her death and had only recently broken down in "depressing moments", telling Barbara Walters: "I would give up everything and start again if I could have my friends back."
